Amaterasu Omikami (meaning "The Great August Divinity Who Shines in Heaven") is the supreme sun goddess and central deity of the Shinto religion, ruling over the High Celestial Plain. She is the mythical ancestress of the Japanese Imperial family and a symbol of the nation.
