The naginata is a traditional Japanese pole weapon consisting of a long wooden shaft with a curved blade mounted at the end. Originally used by samurai on the battlefield for its wide reach and sweeping strikes, it was especially effective against cavalry and multiple opponents. Over time, the naginata became closely associated with women of the samurai class and was practiced for self-defense. Today, it survives as a modern martial art known as naginatajutsu and atarashii naginata, emphasizing discipline, precision, and graceful movement.
